Brief history

Southborough Team Ministry is a team of four Church of England churches situated in the Southborough, Bidborough and High Brooms area of Tunbridge Wells.

Southborough Team Ministry was first established on 1st November 1996 and comprised St Peter’s Church, Christ Church and St Matthew’s Church. The first Team Rector was Canon Clive Porthouse and the first Team Vicar was Chris Wicks. John Castle was Curate at the time.

Clive Porthouse retired in the summer of 1997 and Gerald Hovenden was instituted as Team Rector on 23rd June 1998 (having served previously as Team Vicar for 7 ½ years in the South Gillingham Team Ministry). John Castle moved on in 1999 and Stephen Hills joined the team in his place.

On 1st May 2002 St Lawrence’s Church, Bidborough was added to the team, with Stephen Hills moving to Bidborough as Team Vicar. The current Curate is Alain Chandran.
